BWYP EP 31 HOW I USE DISCIPLINE TO GET A TON OF STUFF DONE + GROW A MILLION DOLLAR BUSINESS PART TIME

ep 31.png

(pssst:  this is a podcast episode too!  If you're not in the mood to read it or want to dive deeper, click below to listen on iTunes or Spotify)

I'm answering a question I get a lot today WITH a bonus.  The question I get most often is "how do you think you'll grow a million dollar business without even putting in full time hours?"  so I'm putting my money where my mouth is & I'm sharing not only my secrets, but WHY I'm doing it this way.

First off, you should know that I'm incredibly ambitious.  Not only in what I can provide for myself, but what I can do to empower other women to reach similar success.  I think that women in general are taught to doubt ourselves more often, can be less assertive & struggle a little bit in a world that has grown to devalue feminine energy & the value it brings and I think it's unfair AF, and I desperately want to change not just how women are viewed by society, but how women view themselves.  My ambition exists none-the-less, but what really fuels me is the desire to add successful women to the world, into politics as well as in business & economy, in the hopes of not only creating change that represents & protects my womanhood, but also in the hopes to add to the representation of successful women that will empower future generations to question what's possible & what they can achieve.

I draw endless inspiration from previous feminist icons & hope to provide that empowerment to future generations, not necessarily to follow my footsteps into business, but to know that they are equally capable & entitled to any form of personal success, regardless of what that is for them.

For me, I feel called to represent financial success & independence by leading by example:  Growing a million dollar business that employs women & gives back to charities, finding success not by stifling my feminine energy, but embracing it.

In all honesty, I'd truly love to throw myself into my business, work 20 hours/day, and hustle, but I can't.  I have chronic pain, residual symptoms from a brain surgery a year ago, and as a highly sensitive person, I can easily get overstimulated by screens & need a lot of recovery time - more than average.  So, in the hopes of creating a long-term legacy, I have to treat my business as a marathon, not a sprint.

I can't allow myself to fall into the "hustle" mentality of grinding hard for quick results - For me, the hustle is like a crash diet.  You might lose 10 pounds in ten days, but can you sustain that long term?  Or are you going to gain the weight all back & be super discouraged about failing?  Yeah, like crash diets, the "hustle" is not for lifers - it's just not sustainable (nor is it healthy).

So, what's a girl to do?  I have million dollar dreams & 25 hours a week for my business, which, yeah, does make growth hard.  And giving anything less than my best effort is not an option - I am making this dream happen, and I'm not making myself sick while I do it, and I'm not losing my relationship, home or happiness either.

Discipline is the name of my game.  Since I have less time than I'd like to grow my business, when I sit down to work, I WORK.  I am focused, I set a timer, I use my daily routines to energize me & set me up for what's next AND I still crush my goals.  It might be a little slower than usual, but really, who decides what is & isn't valid when looking at the time of your business?  You do.  And I refuse to look at my slow but steady progress as anything less than valid because I'm choosing to prioritize my health as I grow.

HERE'S THE JIST

Time for some details.  If you'd like a time-table of what my work weeks look like (back to school style for all my Virgo babes out there), then grab a PDF of what my work week looks like.  It changes a little everyday, I'm not going to lie, but in general, this is how I’m growing a million dollar business, and I'm going to break down the key components below.

So, I start working most days between 10 & 11, and no, that's not to make time for a huge breakfast or a crazy workout.  My mornings are pretty simple, with a minimal morning routine (as your daily routines should be restful, not rigorous) and then an hour or two of free time that I might allocate to journaling, working out, meditating, cleaning, relaxing with a podcast or even (gasp) TV.  I really do whatever I'd like with this time, because I know that regular rest & fun is crucial to recharge the brain, and I want to be bringing my freshest self to the table.

One thing I do before work, however, is check in on social media.  I'm incredibly fueled & passionate about my followers, so most mornings from bed, I check in on Facebook & Instagram, and I'll usually do a post right from between the sheets at around 6am, when my boyfriend wakes me up with his morning routine.  I definitely don't recommend this for everyone, but I'm really careful to curate my social feeds to be motivating & uplifting - if I find myself comparing or feeling bad when I look at someone else's feed, it's an immediate unfollow.  I want every part of my business + life to be as nurturing and uplifting as possible, so if something isn't working for me, it gets a hard pass.  It's one of the ways I protect my energy.

First, I plan my day: I use a product called The Productivity Planner to plan my days one day at a time.  I know some people really like to plan their days in advance, but I plan my weekly priorities on Monday & decide daily priorities on a day-to-day basis:  My only deadlines center around the podcast I release on Tuesdays & Thursdays, so luckily I have the benefits of a pretty flexible schedule and I can often pursue whatever seems most interesting to me, which helps me stay inspired & motivated.  With The Productivity Planner, you pick 5 daily tasks & prioritize them based on importance, but I also set aside an extra 30 minutes at the beginning of the day to check my email & make sure I'm progressing towards long-term goals in my project management software.

Then, I work for about 2-3 hours in focused chunks of 25 minutes each called pomodoros, which goes hand-in-hand with the productivity planner.  You can find great pomodoro timer apps to use on your phone or desktop that makes it super easy to use this system.  With this system, I work in 25 minute chunks with 5 minute breaks and then every 6 hours, I get an hour long break.  I don't stick to this system perfectly & sometimes take an earlier break, but for the most part, I'm really strict about the 25 minute time chunks.  I'm very focused during this time & can pretty much only be interrupted by an emergency or a cat jumping on my lap, so I know that my work-time involves bringing my best self to the table.

So, usually I continue with that for five or six hours up in my office, with breaks where I see fit.  Most days, I'm finished what I have to do for the day by 3 or 4 pm. Which is perfect because my boyfriend usually gets home around 4:30 and I do not work well with other distractions in the house.  BUT, not every day is perfectly productive, and that's totally okay.  Productivity ebbs & flows, and if I'd struggled during the day to get stuff done, I'll take a little time after dinner to finish things up while Chris hobbies.  This isn't ideal, but it's not the end of the world - I'm a work-at-home solopreneur, so when Chris gets home, I'm ready to talk & snuggle all night, but he doesn't have the benefit of lots of alone time like I do, so he doesn't mind if I have to work for a few hours in the evening.

THE POWER OF FOCUS + DISCIPLINE

As you can see from my timetable, I get a lot done in a pretty short amount of time - but it wasn't always like that.  I used to really struggle when it came to sitting down & getting work done (I even dropped out of college… TWICE) and when I started my business, I was used to failing & knew that I specifically needed to grow my discipline + focus if I wanted results.

I knew that the hours I put into my business needed to be focused & high impact.  If I wanted to reach my goals, I couldn't waste my time, so growing my discipline & focus was the first major personal growth effort I put forward.

I've used a couple of tools to help me out with this:  Asana, which is a project management tool that I mainly use to track & hold myself accountable to long-term goals, The Productivity Planner, a bare-bones, essentials only physical planner that makes it easy to focus on high-impact activities and, with that, the Pomodoro system which breaks big tasks into manageable, 30 minute chunks with built in breaks, and that works really well for me.

Another huge tip that I've learned is that I do my best to group like tasks together.  I do this in a couple of ways - I try to focus my weekly content by theme, so when I'm creating podcast episodes, blog posts & social media posts, I'm already focused & knowledgeable about what I’m sharing.  I don't have to research something new every time I post and on top of that, every week I can make sure that what I'm teaching is really sinking in and getting it's moment.  I also do my best to focus similar tasks together - I record more than one podcast episode at once, I respond to emails in batches, and if I’m getting made up to record a video, you'd best believe that I'm making the most of that face & getting a few videos, a selfie & a good instagram story in there.

These tools & tips help a lot, but I've also made some lifestyle changes to help keep me ready to slay my goals in way less time - mainly, working out & not eating like crap.  If your body is in good physical shape, you're sharper & more energized, but not only that, it's also one of the best & simplest things you can do for your brain power.  Like, ever.  It floods your brain with excellent hormones, it increases your blood flow to your whole body (brain included) and it's been shown to significantly reduce stress & mental health issues while increasing your overall well-being.  As someone who's trying to stay in tip-top form for my business, I recognize that I expect big things from my mind & body, and I train like an athlete to make these things happen.

When you're growing your discipline, the most important thing to remember is that it takes time & it needs to be worked like a muscle.  And, just like with any workout, you'll probably struggle a little at first, and your improvement will probably come in short bursts.  It's really frustrating at the time, wondering where your newfound productivity has gone, but over time your improvement will be more & more consistent.  This type of work isn't the easiest to take on, but your improvement will mean more clarity & impact on every aspect of your life that requires attention or problem solving, so I think it's safe to say that growing your discipline is a huge life upgrade.

If you're wanting to see how all of this comes together into my weekly schedule, grab my one-page PDF where I break down my work week into a time-table, school style.  This way, you can see where I spend my time, how I spend it & exactly how much I'm actually getting done (& spoiler alert, it's a lot and for now, I'm leading a team of one) so click the link below to join my email list & grab the free download!

If you'd like to hear me share even more about my high-impact, discipline-based work schedule, this blog post goes hand in hand with a podcast episode all about it!  You can listen on itunes & spotify, or on the player attached to this post.

I hope this filled your sails & watered your roots.  Until next time,

BWYP EP 29: The Sneaky Dangers & Symptoms of Burnout & My Burnout Story

So, burnout has sort of turned into this phenomenon that people just kind of wait for & deal with when it comes, and for business owners, it can feel as common as a cold & it's not okay.

In this week's episode, I'm sharing a little bit about burnout - what it is, what it feels like & what to do about it. Because, the thing is, as you'll learn from my own burnout story, it really knocks you on your ass & it doesn't have to. Building a business around smart, sustainable business habits (even a million dollar business like the one I'm growing) is always the smarter, more sustainable move.

Since this is a podcast episode, you can listen on the player on this post or you can click the links below to listen elsewhere.  I hope you love this episode - I really loved making it!  It's something a little different for me, but I'd love to do more educational episodes like this if you're all into it!

This episode is for all my badass bosses who are so into their business & business that your self-care game is starting to slip. No shade, I'm guilty of this myself! 🙈 But, since self-care is so important when it comes to keeping us in tip top shape for success & all that life has to offer, I brought self-care QUEEN Jessica McCarty from Farmhouse Relaxing to the podcast so she can tell us a little bit about her story, her mission & how EASY self-care can be, even when you're super bus like she is, with an 8 year old, a full-time job AND business.

BWYP EP 22: 4 THINGS I WASN'T GOING TO TELL YOU

ep 22 (1).png

This week on Bloom Where You're Planted, it gets personal.

Like, almost-didn't-hit-publish personal.

But, I've been starting to feel like I was hiding something.  I never want to look like I have it all together, I want it to be clear that I'm very much a constant work in progress.

So, this week, I'm sharing some of my highs + lows with you guys & trying to lean in to how uncomfortable I am & embrace the vulnerability.  I'm talking about things like:

  • the self-doubt struggle
  • being married at 20 & divorced by 22
  • my goals to be a millionaire
  • & my love of all things witchy & woo

My Nightly Routine to Attract Abundance, Joy + Productivity

podcast ep 16.png

Nightly routines.  Yep.  I'm going there, here on the blog and on the podcast, too.  Did you catch this week's episode?

I know I have not been a fan of routines in the past, and that's still true.  I even made a podcast about it, where I talked about ditching my morning routine (right here!).  I'm a person who finds most structure restricting & excessive, and I definitely don't like a lot of it in my downtime.  A lot of structure doesn't feel restful to me, it feels like my work day is just continuing.  I definitely need time to "do nothing," but that doesn't mean that all structure is useless to me.

Lately, I've been craving the comfort of a little consistency.  Since I can set my schedule however I'd like, sometimes that means that my days look drastically different from each other, and I've been feeling a little scattered about it - trouble sleeping, higher anxiety, more irritable.  I felt that bringing in a little more routine to my nighttimes might help wind me down after a day full of creativity, vulnerability & showing up.  So far, I was right.

But, I knew I couldn't just fill my night with arbitrary things that I felt pressured to check off every night.  I knew that a long routine like that would only wind me up more, and that's the last thing I wanted.  I knew I needed to create a routine that both wound me down & kept my emotional energy and vibration high, so I got to work constructing a very simple, minimal routine.

Since I'm the type of person who needs to turn their brain off at the end of the day, I decided to pick only the most integral parts of a good night, and make the routine from there.  I looked at the steps in my routine as Pillars, leaving lots of room between them to breathe & flow as you wish, while still taking care of myself and my vibration.

This left me with a super minimal routine of 4 things that really help move the needle when it comes to improving my night & feeling my joy.  None of these things are overly complex or taxing, and I really love how easy it is to go through this routine while still staying present & enjoying my night with my boyfriend, who works out of the house during the day.

Here's how my super minimal, framework-style nighttime routine works:

eat a good dinner

I'm not the best about eating regularly during the day.  I'm notorious for either completely forgetting to eat, or just grazing mindlessly through the day, one leaves me exhausted & shaky, the other empties my fridge & makes me bloated.   Neither is a super sexy option, but ultimately, during the day, I don't think to eat.  My body doesn't respond well to eating first thing, and I like to work a little bit in the morning on an empty stomach, it helps keep me sharp.

As much as I'm working on it, I knew that since I tend to forget to eat properly, I needed to include a good dinner that leaves me feeling full & satisfied.  This way, I can be sure I'm eating at least ONE good meal a day, so if I ate like crap (or not at all), my body isn't running on fumes & I have a nice full belly when I'm trying to sleep.

80% of the time, this meal is pretty healthy, with lots of veggies, but it doesn't HAVE to be - my priority is just to feel full, because that really helps me sleep.  If I'm in the mood for something more indulgent (or even fast food) I definitely work this in once-in-a-while, but I generally try to keep it balanced & at least incorporate some veggies and hummus or a healthy snack if I need something later on.

decide on my clothes the night before

I'm not someone who's very productive working in my pyjamas from the couch.  Sometimes that's how it is, but generally, I'm most productive when I'm looking cute, wearing a little makeup + bra, and I even have a pair of inside shoes I wear.

Mind you, these outfits are not business casual, they're simple + comfy.  For instance, yoga pants + a comfy, cute top is pretty much my uniform, no jewelry and just a little makeup.  Since my outfit is so simple, with only a few main pieces, I don't need to lay it out or make a big show of it.  This step is as simple as having an idea of what I want to wear & making sure it isn't dirty.  If I have to get it from the dryer in the morning, that's totally fine.

self-love

For me, my favourite act of self-love is making sure to carve out time for myself.  Most nights, this looks like netflix & snacks with my honey.  Making myself a priority without putting adding any pressure to "perform" is a game-changer for me.

Since I like to leave lots of time for myself within my nighttime routine, I sometimes work in other nice things.  A minimal routine like this really leaves room for me to flow to whatever feels good without feeling rushed or exhausted.  Sometimes, when I'm feeling it, I'll work in other, more self-care style things like a DIY facial, taking a bath or sauna, going for a walk, exercising, or doing something creative (like painting, drawing, writing, or playing music).

plan the next day

This probably isn't news to you, but planning out your priorities in advance really helps to level up your productivity AND it saves your mental energy.  It helps give me the reassurance that I can hit the ground running the next day, it gets my distracting, end-of-the-day thoughts out of my brain and on paper, and I don't have to keep going through my list all night so I don't forget anything.

This is something you can keep really simple.  If you like apps, you can even just use the reminders tool on your phone to do this, if you're a pen-and-paper kind of person, then a post-it on your desk could even do the job.  If you want to get a little more functionality, you could use project planning software like Asana or Trello, or a paper day planner works great too.

In the past, I've mainly used Asana + a bullet journal to stay on top of my day-to-day, but I recently found a tool I wanted to share with you called the Productivity Planner.  I still use Asana to manage the moving parts of my business projects, but I'm really loving the productivity Planner for two reasons:  It's a non-digital way to plan my life (I love apps, but too much screen time can leave me a little overstimulated, so a paper planner is ideal) and it does seem to be boosting my productivity.  It's a planning system as well as a planner, and if you're into it, I'd highly suggest you check it out, because here I am: giving them a free promo without a sponsorship.  Needless to say, I'm a big fan & I've been sharing a peek into my planner over on  my Instagram.

So, that's my super minimal, pillar/framework style night time routine.  I'm so, so thrilled that I finally figured out a way to make nighttime routines work for me + my life, and on top of that, I'm so excited that I get to share it with you, now that I've worked out the kinks.  I hope you try it out for yourself! If you do, leave a comment on the podcast or the here on the blog & let me know!

PS:  If you loved this post, it's also a podcast!  You can hear me go more in-depth on the topic by playing it in the players on this post OR listening on iTunes or Spotify!

PPS:  You know I'm obsessed with Instagram, right?  On my podcast, I always like to share a little about my week + what's new with me, but Instagram's really where the party's at for me.  GO give me a follow!  More of a Facebook kinda person?  I have a page you can check out AND a private group for sensitive creatives (you can sign up here!)

BWYP EP 13: Struggling Creative? Here's your missing piece.

podcast image ep 13.png

To be honest, most days, I feel like the definition of a struggling creative.  It's really easy to take the best parts of being creative for granted while hating on my sensitivity, lack of focus & self-doubt.  I'm not saying all creatives struggle with this, but I definitely do.

Most days, I struggle to feel focused, grounded & supported as I pursue life as a sensitive creative entrepreneur, and after a little digging, I've learned that I'm not alone (even if I feel that way).  Other creative women feel the same way that I do, I just haven't found enough of them.   But, scrolling through instagram, watching & listening to what other creative women are sharing & connecting with them in the comments feels like food for my creative soul & I'm here for it.  I feel represented, in community, seen.

My blog (which you're reading) and my podcast, Bloom Where You're Planted, is a love letter to my creativity, in an effort to embrace & optimize myself as I am.  I'm tired of working against myself, in the past year I've really made an effort to embrace my creativity & make something beautiful from it, instead of trying to produce other things despite it.  But, as I shared, I'm not the most effective creative when I'm left without structure, so I've been looking for different ways that I can live my most effective, efficient & effervescent life.

Community.  I think I've figured it out.  I'm not sure, I haven't quite tested it out yet, but I'm pretty sure that as a sensitive creative, I need to surround myself with people who get it, and so do you.  Who not only push me to grow, but give me a soft place to land, share & just be.  As I continue to explore this, I'm getting more & more certain that in order for us to grow & live our best lives (effective, efficient AND effervescent) access to a community like this is crucial.

Because, It doesn't take much for me to feel like a sweet little peach at the bottom of a backpack.  Sweet, soft, the perfect companion to a summer day, great bum, but requires a gentle hand or can end up easily bruised.  And I know I'm not alone.

So, in this week's podcast (which you can check out on iTunes & Spotify) I'm talking about how I'm levelling up as a creative, and I'm inviting you along with me as I try it out.

I've created a closed Facebook Group for sensitive, creative women that you can sign up for right here!  I know I'm not the only one who's craving something like this, so I'm launching + growing this group into something that feels safe, open & encouraging, so my other sensitive creatives can enjoy and grow along with me and the group.

The group is called North Collaborative (just like this blog!) and I'm gonna be your host.  I'm really excited to use this space to get to know each of you a little better, and you can also get to know me!  I'm gonna do what I do best over there, sharing my tips & ideas to help sensitive creatives have fun + get more shit done.

So, for all you sensitive creatives, I hope you're doing well!  Ideally, you aren't craving community because you're beautifully surrounded + supported in your day-to-day, but if not, I urge you to change that.  Finding other creatives that you can connect with will not only make you feel more supported, but will likely bring forth some of your best creativity.  If you're struggling to find your people and an online community sounds right to you, you can sign up below, but if online doesn't sound like your best option, then get out into your community & meet new people.

I really encourage you to make this change if it feels right for you.  I was really nervous to try something new, but even the beginning stages have made it clear to me that this was the right move.

Lotsa love,

Andrea

BWYP EP 11 - My Latest Obsession: The Law Of Attraction

Today's episode is more of a sharing sesh:  I'm sharing something I love a lot with a new series called "My Latest Obsession" where I'll be sharing recent favourites on a monthly basis with you guys.  I've really been craving a deeper connection with you guys, and so far, this is how I'll get there.  Do you love it?  Give it a listen below & let me know!

ABOUT THE LAW OF ATTRACTION

  • The law of attraction is the idea that "like attracts like"
  • The Secret is a main way that people come to find it
    • It tends to focus (in my experience) on manifesting wealth & other material possessions
    • This is great, but it leaves a lot out
  • To expand on the concept, The Energy you put out in the world will attract more of that energy into your life
  • To attract something, focus & feel that abundance in related areas of your life
  • Be aware that feeling desperate or Thirsty over something will just attract more of that desperate feeilng & lack
  • The best place to learn about this is the Quantum Living Living Quick Guide over on Jess Lively's Podcast, The Lively Show

HOW I'M ADDING IT INTO MY LIFE

  • I check into my actions often with questions like
    • If I was already creatively & financially fulfilled, how would I act about this?
    • Why not me?
  • I can't say for sure that I'm attracting abundance, but keeping the law of attraction in mind when I'm going about my day to day motivates me to show up a lot more both creatively behind the scenes & on the front end of my business

why I'm obsessed:  The idea that I can attract my own success is super addicting to me.

That's my sharing on the topic today!  I know its brief on the blog but I go much more in depth in the podcast, so if you're interested then give it a listen on the player below!  As always, you can reach me on facebook & instagram to let me know if you're loving it or not (so please do) and I'm so happy I get to share this with you guys.

Lots of love!

Andrea
